Company Background

Driven by deep passion for vision care, we started with the opening of the very first Focus Point store in Muar, Johor, back in 1989. At the time, it was simply called Focus Vision Care Centre and the store was nothing more than a small counter in shopping centre.

Following the establishment of Focus Point Vision Care Group Sdn Bhd in 1993, a head office was set up in Batu Pahat, Johor to provide management and operational support to the growing number of retail stores. The early 2000s marked another turning point for Focus Point. We moved our headquarters to Petaling Jaya, Selangor, solidifying our presence in the Klang Valley while continuing our nationwide expansion. Meanwhile, in 2002, we had officially launched our Franchise Programme, which played a pivotal role in expanding our retail network across Malaysia and beyond.

As the business flourished, our President & CEO, Dato Liaw Choon Liang was aware of the corporation’s social responsibilities in giving back to the society, and thus the Focus Point Caring Hearts Charity Foundation was formed in 2007, which carries the motto, “Together, We Make A Difference”. Our Foundation partnered with various NGOs to provide essential eye care services to the communities.

In 2010, Focus Point achieved a major milestone by becoming the first optical retail chain to be listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia. In 2014, Focus Point is officially recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest optical retail chain store in Malaysia. One of the key drivers of Focus Point’s growth and success is our ability to meet the diverse needs of the broad spectrum of consumer segments through specialised sub-brands and retail concepts like Focus Point, Focus Point Signature, Focus Point Concept Store, Focus Point Outlet, Focus Point Lifestyle, Focus Point SightSavers, Whoosh Eyewear, Opulence, Eyefont, Optometris Anggun and i-Focus, each targeting a specific demographic.

At the same time, we are also embracing a knowledge-based economy where innovation and technology are essential in adding to our value, enhancing our professional services and boosting our overall competitiveness. Focus Point is also the first in the optical market to have embarked on eCommerce in aims of building online to offline shopping experience for customers.

In 2023, Focus Point successfully transferred to the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. From those humble beginnings, we have grown from a small-town optical store to a company that not only leads the eyewear retail industry in the country, but one that is set to make its mark on the region. To date, we have more than 200 stores operating across Malaysia and Brunei, with more than 230 eye care professionals ready to serve you.

1989

The first Focus Point store opened in Muar, Johor.

1994 - 1996

Opened more than 10 stores and formed the first management team, setting up an office in Batu Pahat.

1997

Expanded to Klang Valley with the opening of more than 10 new stores.

1998

Participated in the BonusLink’s Customer Loyalty Program to offer privileges to BonusLink cardmembers.

1999

  • Launched Optical City flagship store in Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, recognised as Asia’s Biggest One-Stop Optical Centre in the Malaysia Book of Records.
  • Ventured into ophthalmology with the creation of “ExcelView Laser Eye Centre”.

2000

  • Headquarters moved from Johor to Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
  • Launched the Mobile Optical Service (MOS), a 16-foot vehicle equipped with optical equipment.

2001

First foreign venture in China.

2002

Launched the Franchise Programme.

2004

Developed sub-brands such as “Opulence” and “Solariz”.

2007

Formed the Focus Point Caring Hearts Charity Foundation with the motto “Together, We Make A Difference”.

2008

Celebrated the opening of the 100th store at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

2009

  • Rebranded its “Opulence” retail brand as a premium luxury store
  • Debuted the first Carl Zeiss concept store, named “Eyefont”.
  • Launched a new marketing publication, "Eye Glamour Magazine".

2010

  • Focus Point became the first optical retail chain to be listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia.
  • Business expansion to Brunei through Franchise Programme.

2012

Ventured into Food & Beverage sector with the launch of “Komugi”.

2013

Developed sub-brand such as “Focus Point Signature”.

2014

  • Launched Business Opportunity Sharing Scheme (BOSS Scheme).
  • Recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the Largest Optical Retail Chain in Malaysia.

2015

  • Developed sub-brand such as “Whoosh Eyewear”.
  • F&B business expansion to Philippines through Franchise Programme.

2016 - 2017

Developed sub-brands such as “Focus Point Concept Store” and “Focus Point Outlet”.

2018

  • Expanded “Komugi” to Australia through Franchise Programme.
  • Launched an online platform, pioneering eCommerce in Malaysia’s optical market.

2019

Developed sub-brand such as “Focus Point Lifestyle”, combining cafe & optical retail.

2020

Integrated Virtual Try-On tools on the Company’s online platform.

2022

  • Developed sub-brand such as “Optometris Anggun”.
  • Introduced an Interest-Free Study Loan for undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Optometry.
  • Launched Malaysia’s first Optical Protection Plan with AIA Malaysia.

2023

  • Focus Point officially transferred to the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia.
  • Introduced 360º Advanced Primary Eye Care (APEC) services.
  • Developed sub-brand such as “Focus Point SightSavers”.
  • Embraced the AirDoc AI-powered fundus interpretation screening service.
  • Introduced scholarships for undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Optometry.

2024

  • Partnered with International Specialist Eye Centre (ISEC) to deliver unparalleled level of service and care to patients.
  • Expanded the F&B business with the launch of “HAP&PI Frozen Yogurt”.
  • Approached a robust Sustainability Framework with four pillars: Marketplace, Workplace, Environment, and Community.
  • Aligned business with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, advancing eye health and overall wellness.
