On 10 October 2024, Focus Point Holdings Berhad proudly launched its annual World Sight Day campaign at Mid Valley Megamall, bringing together an inspiring group of leaders in eye health. The event was graced by Dato’ Sri Suriani, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, along with industry experts, to raise awareness of the growing challenge of myopia, particularly among children. As our society faces this increasing concern, World Sight Day 2024 serves as a crucial call to action to safeguard the future of the next generation.
At Focus Point, World Sight Day holds a special significance—it’s about more than just raising awareness. It’s about making a real difference in the lives of people in our community. Since the beginning of 2024, we’ve provided free eye screenings to over 26,580 individuals—a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, and just the beginning of our mission to ensure that healthy vision is accessible to all. We believe that good eyesight is the foundation of a vibrant and fulfilling life, which is why we’re deeply committed to creating a lasting impact.
Aligned with SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, our efforts go far beyond vision screenings. Our mission covers the entire value chain—from Education to Employment and Entrepreneurship. We’re not just treating vision problems; we’re empowering communities. We teach the importance of eye health, provide jobs within the industry, and support those who aspire to be entrepreneurs. Through scholarships, internships, and career opportunities, we nurture the next generation of optometrists, building a sustainable future for eye care.
CEO’s Speech: A Vision for the Future
During his speech, Dato' Liaw Choon Liang, Group CEO of Focus Point, shared powerful insights about the global challenge we face:
"According to the IAPB, 450 million children globally need a pair of glasses to see clearly. Refractive errors, particularly myopia, are leading and increasing causes of visual impairment and blindness in children. The prevalence of myopia in children and adolescents is rapidly rising in many parts of the world, largely due to lifestyle changes."
Dato’ Liaw also highlighted the significance of Focus Point’s ongoing efforts to provide vision care and support to communities:
"Focus Point commemorates the World Sight Day campaign every year with the aim of advocating for eye health, education, and support. For the past 12 years, we have continued our great efforts to provide free comprehensive vision screenings to the public. This year alone, we have reached more than 26,580 people, conducting screenings in schools, universities, local communities, and corporations, ensuring vision care is accessible to all."
In line with the "Love Your Eyes Kids" theme for this year, Dato’ Liaw underscored the importance of focusing on children’s eye health:
"We have donated more than 1,000 pairs of eyewear to students in need since the beginning of the year. We encourage parents, schools, and everyone to help children make their vision a priority. It’s crucial they take steps to protect their sight by reducing screen time, spending more time outdoors, and participating in regular vision screenings."
Focus Point’s sustainability efforts also extend to a used eyewear donation campaign, introduced as part of our commitment to SDG 3. This initiative encourages people to donate unwanted eyewear, helping those in need while promoting responsible consumption. Dato’ Liaw invited everyone to contribute, saying:
"If you have any unwanted eyewear, we encourage you to donate it to help those in our community who are in need."
Guest of Honour: Supporting the Next Generation of Eye Care Professionals
In her speech, Dato’ Sri Suriani, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, commended Focus Point’s initiatives to nurture the future of optometry:
"I am particularly pleased to note Focus Point's initiatives to empower optometry students by awarding scholarships, providing internship support, and creating employment opportunities. As a market leader, Focus Point sets a commendable example by nurturing the next generation of optometrists and collaborating with educational institutions to bridge the gap in eye care services."
She emphasized how Focus Point’s commitment to education, employment, and entrepreneurship demonstrates its dedication to sustainability and to the future of eye care in Malaysia.
The Road Ahead
The World Sight Day 2024 campaign is only the beginning of Focus Point’s continued efforts to make a lasting difference. Our roadshow from 7th to 13th October at Mid Valley Megamall offers free eye screenings, myopia management consultations, and opportunities to learn more about vision care for everyone, particularly young children.
As Focus Point remains committed to spreading awareness and empowering communities, we invite everyone to join us in our mission to ensure that healthy vision is a priority for all ages, from the youngest to the oldest. Together, we can create a future where clear vision is accessible to all, helping our communities thrive with health, well-being, and opportunity.
Let’s continue to #LoveYourEyes and make a difference—one eye at a time.
